Affiliate Marketing Is Not “Field of Dreams”: Why “If You Build It, They Will Come” Doesn’t Work Here
March 11, 2025
You’ve just joined a new affiliate program—congrats! Whether you’re brand new to affiliate marketing or adding another program to your roster, now’s the time to get organized and set the foundation for success. Here are the first five things you should do to make the most of your new partnership.

Check the Program Policies
Before you promote a single link or draft any new content, check program policies. This might seem like a tedious task, but it's where you'll find critical details that can either empower or limit how you promote.
Start by locating the official program terms, usually found in your affiliate dashboard or welcome email. Look closely for:
- Commission structure: Is it a flat fee or a percentage of sales? Do different products have different commission tiers?
- Cookie duration: How long do you have from the time someone clicks your link until they purchase?
- Payout thresholds and schedules: Will you be paid monthly, biweekly, or only after a certain amount accumulates?
- Promo restrictions: Some programs don’t allow bidding on branded keywords or using coupon sites.
- Content usage rights: Can you use brand images? Are there guidelines around product claims or messaging?
Overlooking these rules could get you banned or cost you commissions later. Make sure you're crystal clear on the boundaries before you jump in. Treat this step as your onboarding—it’s not just about playing by the rules; it’s about leveraging them wisely.
Check Current Specials
All of the Apogee-managed affiliate programs send out a monthly newsletter with the latest promotions, product launches, and seasonal deals. If you’ve just joined, there’s a good chance you missed the most recent update—or maybe it’s sitting unopened in your inbox. Take a moment to look for past emails from the program so you’re not missing any current offers you can promote right away.
You should also log into the affiliate network and check the coupons or deals section. This is usually where the program keeps an up-to-date list of active promotions, discount codes, and featured products—all great tools to help you drive conversions from day one.
QUICK TIP: If you are publishing on WordPress, use a reusable block or “pattern” for your deals and promotions. This way, when you receive your affiliate newsletter each month, you can easily change the promotion in one place, and it will update all of your content across your site.
Connect with your Affiliate Manager
One of the biggest benefits of working with a managed affiliate program is having a dedicated affiliate manager. Your manager can help you maximize your earnings potential with guidance, suggestions and even insider news about the company and program.
Your affiliate manager is your best resource for sales and specials from the brand, brainstorming ideas for content creation, making sure you are in compliance with FTC and more.
Affiliate managers occasionally have sponsored campaign opportunities as well, and go to their affiliates they know will be a good fit for the brand. Building a relationship with your affiliate manager is a great way to maximize your earning potential.
Think about Old Content
Once you're familiar with the program, start looking through what you've already published. Now’s the time to think about where you can insert links in your existing content.
This is low-hanging fruit.
Browse your top-performing blog posts, YouTube videos, emails, and social posts. Ask yourself:
- Do any existing posts mention products similar to this one?
- Can I swap out old Amazon or generic links for affiliate links?
- Are there posts where this product would naturally fit into the conversation?
Example: If you just joined a kitchenware affiliate program and you’ve previously written a blog post on “10 Easy Weeknight Meals,” update it with links to pans, knives, or utensils that you now promote.
This strategy gives you instant traction. Instead of waiting on a brand-new post to rank or gain views, you’re leveraging content that’s already proven its value.
Think about New Content
This is where creativity meets strategy. With the basics handled, it's time to brainstorm new content for the affiliate program products.
Fresh content is how you grow reach, trust, and long-term affiliate income. Start by answering these questions:
- What problems does this product solve?
- What pain points does it address?
- What kind of content would naturally feature this product?
Here are some ideas to get you rolling:
- How-to tutorials featuring the product in use
- Comparison posts (“Brand X vs. Brand Y – Which is better?”)
- Seasonal guides (“Best Mother’s Day Gifts for New Moms”)
- Behind-the-scenes content showing how you actually use the product
- Video unboxings or first impressions
- Weekly roundups where the product appears as a casual mention
This is also where you can pull insights from your audience. What questions do they ask in your comments? What topics get the most engagement?
Content that feels natural, helpful, and personal will always outperform a generic sales pitch.
Don’t be afraid to test multiple formats. Try a carousel on Instagram, a product reel, a blog post, and an email campaign. Let the data guide your next move..
Also, when you create new content, consider sending it into your affiliate manager — they may have additional ideas for how to utilize the content and may send it over to the brand, which can turn into more opportunities for you in the future.
Remember, evergreen product reviews offer long term affiliate opportunities that convert well.
